My food/restaurant blog

I'm still not posting anything of substance here but I have recently rebirthed (what a mess) my food and restaurant blog at http://eatininlincoln.blogspot.com. I still try to focus on Lincoln and Omaha restaurants but I think things will skew more towards airport food and "not Lincoln" restaurants since I'm not in Lincoln much.

I would like to be the first to review the Benson Bazooka Bakeshop when it opens.

So you all can hear this awesome rendition of "O Holy Night." It's indescribably awful but I love it so much. I've listened to it for about four years now every Xmas time and it always makes me get in the spirit no matter what.

Click for Jesus

Today

There are these rumors on the, uh, internets, that today, Jan. 22, is supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. I'm not sure why since the least sunny day of the year was a month ago and most people have their own personally depressing days that stem from events, not calendars. I can usually pinpoint my depression down to periods or hours within days. Last night was not good, for example.

I had the best job interview I've ever had in my life this morning. I woke up extra early despite not going to sleep until 2:30 and steamed my Gieves & Hawkes suit so I'd look extra dashing. Then, as Thomas suggested, I picked out my best underwear (Old Navy boxers with a topographical map on them) and my best socks (cushy, black socks from Target) and headed out.

I interviewed with two people and the second was very impressed that I had extra copies of my resume with me so he and the other manager wouldn't have to fight over the good one or make copies. The interview itself was awesome. I felt like I quickly developed a rapport with both interviewers. I also felt very relaxed and aware despite my five hours of sleep. Plus I gave really good, unique answers to all the stups stock interview questions.

Then I came home and studied for a couple hours before deciding to have a viewing day since I didn't have to work tonight. First, I watched Little Miss Sunshine. After that I watched Children of Men and then I watched as much of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as I could stand. That sent me straight to the Family Guy archives which is where I am now.

The Target store brand ginger beer is way too sweet and therefore unsuitable for the making of Moscow Mules.

And a question: When did the 48th & R Target get booze back? They had liquor, beer and wine there back around 2000 but got rid of it after a year but Friday afternoon when I went in there for the first time in a couple months they had a whole aisle of wine including a bunch of Archer Farms boxed wine.

Excuse Me, AGAG?

I need to slip into my Serious Suit and tie on my Pedantic Tie for a few minutes here as I digest one of the more stunningly stupid statements I've heard yet from Attorney General Abu Gonzalez. In Senate hearings on warrantless wiretapping this past week there was this exchange between Gonzalez and Republican senator from PA, Arlen Specter.
AG: “There is no expressed grant of habeas in the Constitution; there’s a prohibition against taking it away."

Arlen Specter: “Wait a minute. The Constitution says you can’t take it away except in case of rebellion or invasion. Doesn’t that mean you have the right of habeas corpus unless there’s a rebellion or invasion?”

AG: “The Constitution doesn’t say every individual in the United States or citizen is hereby granted or assured the right of habeas corpus. It doesn’t say that. It simply says the right shall not be suspended” except in cases of rebellion or invasion.”

AS: “You may be treading on your interdiction of violating common sense."

There's a pattern of members of the current administration drawing bizarre conclusions based on their fantastical interpretations of the Constitution, like the idea that the Constitution doesn't say the President isn't the King therefore he is, but this is the most openly violative of common sense as Arlen Specter said. Even if you ignore the fact that habeas corpus was created by the Magna Carta in 1215 by a bunch of rich guys fed up with another king and most of the Magna Carta was incorporated into our Constitution by the founders because they thought it was a good idea almost 600 years later, the Constitution confers many rights by saying what the government cannot do.

If you take Abu's reasoning and apply it to the rest of the Constitution there are many rights that have existed for over 200 years which suddenly disappear.

Want to practice your own religion in your church or home without the government interfering? Sorry. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." The Constitution doesn’t say every individual in the United States or citizen is hereby granted or assured the right freedom of religion. It simply says the right shall not be prohibited.

Want to pack a Nine as you walk down O St. just in case? Nope. "[T]he right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The Constitution doesn’t say every individual in the United States or citizen is hereby granted or assured the right to bear arms. It simply says the right shall not be infringed.

Want to feel secure in your own home? Get over it. "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated." The Constitution doesn’t say every individual in the United States or citizen is hereby granted or assured the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects. It simply says the right shall not be violated.

Of course there are many more examples of this I could go through but I think you get the point.

Krin's way too-long quiz from yesterday afternoon. I'm a 2w1 which is pretty dead on. A helper who wants to improve and reform. How far has that gotten anybody?

Helpers who need to be needed

Enneagram type 2 - The HelperPeople of this personality type essentially feel that they are worthy insofar as they are helpful to others. Love is their highest ideal. Selflessness is their duty. Giving to others is their reason for being. Involved, socially aware, usually extroverted, Twos are the type of people who remember everyone's birthday and who go the extra mile to help out a co-worker, spouse or friend in need.

Twos are warm, emotional people who care a great deal about their personal relationships, devote an enormous amount of energy to them, and who expect to be appreciated for their efforts. They are practical people who thrive in the helping professions and who know how to make a home comfortable and inviting. Helping others makes Twos feel good about themselves; being needed makes them feel important; being selfless, makes Twos feel virtuous. Much of a Two's self-image revolves around these issues, and any threat to that self-image is scarcely tolerated. Twos are thoroughly convinced of their selflessness, and it is true that they are frequently genuinely helpful and concerned about others. It is equally true, however, that Twos require appreciation; they need to be needed. Their love is not entirely without ulterior motive.

Twos often develop a sense of entitlement when it comes to the people closest to them. Because they have extended themselves for others, they begin to feel that gratitude is owed to them. They can become intrusive and demanding if their often unacknowledged emotional needs go unmet. They can be bossy and manipulative, feeling entirely justified in being so, because they "have earned the right" and their intentions are good. The darkest side of the type Two fixation appears when the Two begins to feel that they will never receive the love they deserve for all of their efforts. Under such circumstances, they can become hysterical, irrational and even abusive.

Because Twos are generally helping others meet their needs, they can forget to take care of their own. This can lead to physical burnout, emotional exhaustion and emotional volatility. Twos need to learn that they can only be of true service to others if they are healthy, balanced and centered in themselves.

Twos can mistype themselves if they are not in an obvious helper role in their professional lives; they might not recognize the extent of their involvement in assisting others. This is especially true for male Twos, who have not received the same social rewards for helping as female Twos receive. Male Twos frequently mistype as Ones or Threes, the wings of type Two. Females, of all types, are bound to recognize some of the dynamics of type Two in their personalities, as such qualities have been socially reinforced. Female Nines, for instance, are especially prone to mistyping as Twos, particularly if they are the mothers of small children. But Nines are self-effacing and humble; Twos are proud and have a strong sense of their own worth.

Enneagram Type 1 - The Reformer

Perfectionists, responsible, fixated on improvement

Enneagram type 1 - The ReformerPeople of this personality type are essentially looking to make things better, as they think nothing is ever quite good enough. This makes them perfectionists who desire to reform and improve; idealists who strive to make order out of the omnipresent chaos.

Ones have a fine eye for detail. They are always aware of the flaws in themselves, others and the situations in which they find themselves. This triggers their need to improve, which can be beneficial for all concerned, but which can also prove to be burdensome to both the One and those who are on the receiving end of the One's reform efforts.

The One's inability to achieve the perfection they desire feeds their feelings of guilt for having fallen short, and fuels their incipient anger against an imperfect world. Ones, however, tend to feel guilty about their anger. Anger is a "bad" emotion, and Ones strive sincerely and wholeheartedly to be "good." Anger is therefore vigorously repressed from consciousness, bursting forth in occasional fits of temper, but usually manifesting in one of its many less obvious permutations - impatience, frustration, annoyance and judgmental criticality. For this reason, Ones can be difficult to live with, but, on the high side, they tend to be loyal, responsible and capable partners and friends.

Ones are serious people; they tend to be highly principled, competent and uncompromising. They follow the rules and expect others to do so as well. Because they believe so thoroughly in their convictions, they are often excellent leaders who can inspire those who follow them with their own vision of excellence. Reform movements are frequently spearheaded by Ones.

Ones are often driven and ambitious, and are sometimes workaholics. But whatever their professional involvement, they are definitely active, practical people who get things done. They are natural born organizers, listmakers who finish everything on the list, the last one to leave the office, the first one to return, industrious, reliable, honest and dutiful.

The relentlessness of their pursuit of the ideal can make Ones tense people who have a hard time relaxing and who unnecessarily deny themselves many of the harmless pleasures of life. They tend to be emotionally repressed and uncomfortable with expressing tender feelings; they generally see emotionality as a sign of weakness and lack of control. They are seldom spontaneous. They have multiple interests and talents however; they are self-reliant and seldom run out of things to do.

Ones are often intelligent and independent and can easily mistake themselves for Fives, but unlike Fives, Ones are primarily people of action, not thought. Ones tend to worry and are prone to anxiety and can sometimes mistype as Sixes, but they are far less affiliative than Sixes and their standards are not reached by seeking consensus with a group. Finally, the relentless pursuit of perfection can take its toll and lead to depression. At such times, a One can mistype as a Four. But Fours have a tendency towards self-indulgence whereas Ones are self-denying. Fours are emotionally expressive; Ones are emotionally constrained.

Just got home from work and don't feel like going back out. Decided I might as well do the stups sex quiz I saw SarahX and Krin do earlier this week.

          The Pool Boy
          Random Gentle Sex Dreamer (RGSDm)

Friendly and eager. You are The Pool Boy.

A teen at heart, you anxiously move about your daily tasks, hoping, praying for a good, instant lay. You're carefree, enthusiastic, and rarely discouraged. Love is cool, but it's not for you right now. You know what is? Crotches.

You're a fun person in both big and small groups, and your friends trust and love you. Inside you, meanwhile, your lust is only growing. Imagine your beating heart sprouting pubic hair. Exactly. Try shaving that.

                           Your exact opposite:
The False Messiah

Deliberate Brutal Love Master

If you're not scoring enough--which you aren't--you should adopt new strategies. Lower your standards. Be aggressive. Pool Boys are often submissive and hope (desperately) sex will find them. Realize that passiveness will not hook the horny girls you desire. A bolder approach and sheer repetition will.

When browsing OkCupid, consider both The Dirty Little Secret and The Playstation.

ALWAYS AVOID: The Battleaxe, The Priss

Link: The 32-Type Dating Test by OkCupid - Free Online Dating.

I need to eat more

Yesterday I started to wonder why it's been so much easier for me to lose weight; even the 10 extra holiday lbs were gone by the first week of January. I decided to check on how many calories I burn if I wait tables for five hours at a fairly frenetic pace like I will tonight. According to the calculators I've found on-line that number is around 3,000. On Sundays I've been working 9-hour double shifts which aren't nearly as busy in the evenings but are fairly fast-paced in the mornings. That calculates to around 4,500 calories burnt.

I haven't been eating anything really bad for me or too much but judging from the above numbers, I'd probably be losing more weight if I ate a little more junk and some extra carbs. I think I'll get nachos for lunch tomorrow.

***24 Spoilers below***

I swore I would not watch another season of 24 because despite it's addictiveness like the spy and detective novels I read it's essentially just revenge porn.

Howevs, I found myself jumping into the sixth season as I was trolling one of my favorite TV sites for new Office episodes. It's gud and I really can't wait to see how Jack Bauer comes out of this one because it seems Jack, via personal experience, is skeptical about the effectiveness of torture after his stay in a Chinese prison, and is calling it quits after he sees a suitcase nuke detonate over LA.

Starlight Lounge rulezz!

Went downtown tonight with Jack Jackson and the E*S tribe and met up at the Starlite Lounge. I think I've posted about the Starlite before but how awesome 10-midnight happy hour is never really sunk in before. All martinis down there are $2 off which means you can kind of experiment with their drink menu without fear.

I started out with the Chai-tini which sounds really stupid but for $2.75 it was worth the risk. They had a Chai liqueur there I've never seen before that tasted exactly like most chai I've had but boozy. It was good mixed with vodka but I imagine it would be even better mixed in with a really strong cup of black tea. I also tried the ruby red grapefruit martini they had which was basically their Absolut (which I usually hate) Rudy Red Vodka with a sugar rim. It tasted a lot like grapefruit I used to eat as a kid with the serrated grapefruit spoon - really strong, sour grapefruit but with a mess of sugar on top.

Starlite on Tuesdays and Wednesdays is sweet. We were the only table in there until 11:00 when I decided to leave.
